To the editor: The problem that conservatives will probably have with Dr. Hunsinger's letter is the same one they have had all along. If someone agrees with me they are "fair-minded and responsible" (if they disagree they clearly are not). If I disagree with a legal position that has been upheld overwhelmingly in the church it is "vague, ambiguous and full of loopholes" (if the position agrees with my own it is clear and just). Dr. Hunsinger's argument regarding G-6.0106b would appear to be of that case of logical fallacy called the "straw man argument" - taking the weakest part of the opponent's position and presenting it as the whole. I suspect logical fallacies will be key elements of future developments - especially in the church courts - as the appearance of reason and impartiality is counted for more than its substance.
