To the editor:

The WitherSpoon Society article, by Barry Craig, sent off alarms in my head. I have followed (and participated) in the debate surrounding the future of the denomination, but this was the first real sense I had that the PCUSA was doomed. I say this reluctantly, but certainly. IF there is no compromise from the liberal church regarding the essentials of the constitution, then there surely is now no PCUSA, as we have known it. Our separation is complete: we have been opposed on our understanding of Christology, we have been opposed on the unique authority of Scripture, we have been opposed on the definition of marriage and what constitutes holy living, and now we are opposed on the very fabric of our consititution (BoO and Confessions). Someone might say "This is nothing new! Why has it taken him so long to figure it out?" And my only answer is that I thought there was hope. I trusted that the truth of scripture would prevail, that those who do not ascent to the Lordship of Jesus Christ wouldn't bother pursuing ordained Christian service. I trusted that our mutual compliance with the laborious procedures of changing or preserving the church's consitition would insure common ground. I see that I was wrong.

The "dividing line" has now come up to my toes, and I must decide. I have decided that I cannot live in a denomination whose morality is scripturally unfaithful. Apparantly, the liberal side cannot tolerate a denomination whose morality is only scripturally informed. Barry Craig is not even a presbyterian, but the Witherspoon Soc. holds his standard high. Our differences are clearly unreconcilable. Prudence suggests that I (and the congregation I serve) prepare for division. I have always wished there could be another way.
