I read with interest the note written by Rev. Barbara Hager of Southern New England Presbytery, and must say that her remarks about Mr. Rolf Jensen are quite revealing of some of the differences between her (and those who agree with her) and many of us who unashamedly wear the name of the Confessing Church.
1) Rev. Hager says the only "evidence" that can be produced in judicial cases relative to G-06.106b (and not "Amendment B," as she calls it. It has not been an amendment since before it became part of the Constitution!) would be illegal video tape. Many of the cases filed in recent months involve individuals who themselves have openly stated that they are living in defiance of the Constitution.
2) As to her being "ashamed" that Mr. Jensen is, in Rev. Hager's own words, "in MY church" is rather telling. Since when did the PC(USA) become HER church. That is precisely the issue we are fighting over these days: To whom the Church belongs!
3) Rev. Hager reveals, as I see it, her own theological bankruptcy, and that of Protestant Liberalism in general, when she resorts not to dealing with the theological and ethical issues involved in Mr. Jensen's filings, but to psychologizing. To Rev. Hager's way of thinking, since no thinking person can subscribe to the teachings of the Reformed faith (and stated so well in our Book of Confessions) on these matters, anyone who does must have some sort of psychological problem.
In light of the basic inability of folks like Rev. Hager to have a serious theological dialog, are there any takers out there for another "Irreconcilable Differences" overture?
