To the Editor: Mr. Edward Koster maintains that the vast middle of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) probably does not fit either neatly nor entirely into either camp. I certainly wont argue with that. The vast middle of the PCUSA, like the American body politic, is composed of many shades between black and white. Politically, for instance, while I consider myself a conservative I also think Franklin D. Roosevelt saved capitalism (not to mention was a great wartime president) and while I support the right to bear arms, no one needs an AK-47 for hunting or anything else.
Back to the Church, which is supposed to be apart from the secular. The Church is about belief. And belief, as the Apostle Paul tells us is about faith in things we cannot see nor prove. What we do have is Gods Word the Bible and in that Bible God is totally righteous, totally truthful and His Truth does not change. We may be wise as humans if we do not let ourselves become convinced that we have a lock on the truth, nevertheless, the Truth of God is unchanging and immutable. Something that is true does not change.
In a belief system, whether religious or ideological, the true believers set the tone for the system. I want a PCUSA in which conservative evangelicals set the tone. Liberals have brought the Church to wrack and ruin; they need to leave. The PCUSA needs to appeal to Christians who are truly Reformed, committed to Christ, and who accept a body of doctrine wrapped around Calvinist teachings. Thats not the PCUSA of today and the condition we are in reflects that.
