Response to Robert Gagnon
By Mark Achtemeier

Dr. Robert Gagnon has written a long and speculative article, suggesting that I need to respond in greater detail than I already have to the distorted and fabricated statements the Presbyterian Layman has attributed to me on the basis of comments I supposedly made in the course of classroom discussions. Professor Gagnon suggests it is in my best interest to be "a bit more candid" about my views, hinting that I am letting down those who have supported me if I fail to respond to his questions.

I do not believe that my introducing a class of ethics students to a range of views they will encounter as pastors and teachers in the church should now make me subject to interrogations on the basis of distorted and fabricated hearsay accusations. Giving credence to such a principle would damage the life of both church and seminary.

I have never been shy about sharing my opinions. When I have points to make that I consider worthwhile additions to the church's public discussion, I will publish them. Those who have a serious interest in finding out what I have been thinking can find public statements readily available here and here.

In the meantime, I repeat my call for the editors of the Layman to retract the article in question and to print a public apology for the tactics they have employed.

Dr. Mark Achtemeier is Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, University of Dubuque Theological Seminary
