To the Editor:
As one who has served in the U.S. armed forces, I respect former
GA Moderator Rick Ufford-Chase's statement to The Layman that
the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship's "Resisting Militarism"
program being held at Ghost Ranch was not scheduled for over
the Memorial Day weekend.with intention to dishonor American
military service.
I believe, however, that readers of Presbyweb should be advised
that Mr. Ufford-Chase's
description of the program given to The Layman's reporter,
"to create alternatives for students who may not know that
there are other, nonmilitary options for living out a life of
service to the church," differs substantially from the
description given by the Fellowship in
its home-site announcement of the program, "Training
for Trainees." There the program was described as being
"for young adults who are interested in countering the
military recruitment efforts on their high school and college
campuses." "We will counter military recruitment by
recruiting 'Peacemakers.'"
